About my latest book:
Romance in Later Life: “Love Comes at Twilight” by Kay Mehl Miller (Author), Al Francis (Contributor)
Love Comes at Twilight: A Love Story for Seniors is a novel based on the author’s experience of playing bridge on the Internet and meeting a man (now 82), beginning a correspondence with him, and after two years of courtship, finally meeting him in person. While the love story is true, characters and events are invented to present a work of fiction. Al Francis contributed emails from the male point of view. He is on the cover as a “with” author.
The novel is a sweet love story between aging seniors Carol Bradley and Ellis Thompson. Carol is supported and encouraged by a woman’s group which, like a Greek chorus, reflects the trials, tribulations and triumphs of aging. It is the author’s view that “we who are aging are a brave lot. We insist on living with all our senses in as much use as we can get from them.”
One of the major complications in the novel is that Ellis, a Southern gentleman, has been estranged from his wife for 30 years; intimacy in the marriage ended because of her illness (rheumatoid arthritis, several surgeries, and dementia, which became Alzheimer’s. Being raised in the virtues of duty and honor, Ellis stays on to become a reluctant caregiver. Another woman in the novel Beth is a surrogate wife who provides relief for the caregiver, but she is afflicted with alcoholism, which affects the relationship. Complicated, yes, yet all comes together in a thought-provoking and suspenseful story. Carol is grieving the loss of her husband. She is a busy published writer. Both Carol and Ellis are lonely people who work out their needs and longings long distance. Both have chronic illnesses. He is the sicker of the two. Least you think the story might be banal, there is in it lots of humor, insights, and, of course, sex. The kicker is: will they meet in person? Does love triumph? Is it possible to fall in and enjoy love at advanced ages?
